Celebrimbor was the forger of the Rings of Power. Sauron in the guise of a messenger of good faith had him make the now infamous rings, and with his help he forded the One ring. Celebrimbor feeling heavy guilt for what he had created, swore to live on and inhabit the body of Talion. He lies to Talion of course and mainpulates him into killing everyone associated with the Dark Lord himself.

In the ending we see that Celebrimbor wasn't completely under the control of Sauron (as Elves are highly resistant to his power) and he takes the ring for himself, gathers his army, and prepares for battle. Now while the ring is the greatest power ever known to the world, it's ultimately Sauron's and will betray the wearer if it has any chance to get back to the hand of the Dark Lord...and so Celebrimbor, while fighting bravely, lost possession of the ring, and was tortured and later killed alongside his wife and child.

With Sauron defeated, Celebrimbor wishes to return to the Undying Lands (Valinor) but is quickly convinced by Talion to not only stay and fight..but to craft a new ring of power.

"The best thing about playing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is that it makes me feel over-the-top powerful without sacrificing the fear of defeat. It’s got great free-flowing combat and a good-sized, good-looking open world full of Lord of the Rings lore to find, but what makes it special is what’s going on in the background: an intriguing hierarchy of enemies that gives every victory and defeat extra meaning"
